Changelog
v0.78, 2026-11-01
- The Book step now follows the other steps. The book is shown as a visual in the same square and outline, its pages one after another; tap it for the full preview. Preface and End papers are choices ("Include"), and Imposed or Pages is a format choice above one download icon at the right of Back. The long explanation and the personal message are gone.
v0.77, 2026-11-01
- The animation's download icon no longer carries a text label: the Format choice above it already says what you get.
v0.76, 2026-11-01
- A third colour, Shade, appears beside Paper and Ink when Isometric is chosen. It colours the depth of the shapes everywhere: the animation, the sheet, the print and the book. It starts halfway between ink and paper and follows the preset you pick; once you choose a shade of your own it stays until you pick a preset again.
v0.75, 2026-11-01
- On the Animation step SVG, GIF and Video are a choice of format, like the print size, with a single download icon beside Next. The icon is labelled with the chosen format.
v0.74, 2026-11-01
- The download icons now sit at the right of Back and Next, on the same line, instead of at the top. On the Contact sheet step the print size is on its own line just above them. The Next buttons are shorter ("Next: sheet", "Next: book") so everything fits on one line on a phone.
v0.73, 2026-11-01
- On the Contact sheet step the print size (A3, A2, A1, A0) now sits under the download icon, right-aligned, instead of far below the sheet, so the choice and the thing it affects are together.
v0.72, 2026-11-01
- The animation now sits in the same square, with the same outline, as the grid on Draw, so the shape keeps its place between the two steps.
v0.71, 2026-11-01
- Fixed the download icons staying on screen: going Back to Draw left the Animation icons (SVG, GIF, Video) showing. Draw now shows none. The stylesheet and scripts are now tied to the version number, so a browser cannot mix an old copy of one with a new copy of another.
v0.70, 2026-11-01
- Isometric has its own controls in the control panel, shown only when Isometric is chosen: Depth (how thick the shape is), Angle (30 degrees is true isometric; 10 to 55 reaches flatter and steeper views), and a tick for a random angle for each step. With the tick, every step of the animation, every cell of the contact sheet and every page of the book has its own angle, and the same angles are used wherever it is shown.
v0.69, 2026-11-01
- The GIF and the video join the Animation step: SVG, GIF and Video are three download icons beside the step number. The Square or Story choice moves into the control panel, with Flat or Isometric, the speed and the colours. There are four steps now: Draw, Animation, Contact sheet, Book.
v0.68, 2026-11-01
- Downloads are icons opposite the step number, top right, and only the ones for the current step show: SVG on Animation, SVG on the Contact sheet, GIF and Video, then Imposed and Pages for the book. The large download buttons are gone, which frees room in each step. Messages from one step no longer carry over to the next.
v0.67, 2026-11-01
- The treatments (Form, Direction, Solid, Ghost, Density) now sit under the animation, where you can see them work. Flat or Isometric moves into the control panel, with the speed and the colours. The contact sheet and the exports use whatever treatment and view are chosen.
v0.66, 2026-11-01
- The row of step icons (Animation, Sheet, GIF, Book) is gone. The step line at the top ("Step 3 of 5 · Contact sheet") and the Next and Back buttons are all that is needed. Every step now fits on one screen at every size tested, including the smallest phones.
v0.65, 2026-11-01
- The variants are what they are: there is no choosing which to keep, and the sheet no longer lets you hide any. The contact sheet is now an optional output, with its print (A3 to A0) on the same step. The flow is five steps: Draw, Animation, Contact sheet, GIF or video, Book. Animation is the result; the other three are outputs, in order, with the book last.
v0.64, 2026-11-01
- Making and unmaking are one output, so there is no rule to choose. Draw a shape and press the yellow button: the animation, the sheet, the print, the GIF and the book carry both, in one sequence, titled "36 ways I can make you up and 9 ways to unmake you". The Rule step is gone, so the flow is six steps: Draw, Animation, Sheet, Print, GIF or video, Book. If the blocks do not touch, only the unmaking is made. The ghost and density views look back within the making, or within the unmaking, not across the two.
v0.63, 2026-11-01
- On Draw the grid size sits above the grid. The shapes, Clear and Random share one row on phones as well; the button is now called Random (it was Random symbol). The page no longer scrolls on a 360 by 640 phone.
v0.62, 2026-11-01
- Remake is removed. Form has two rules, Make and Unmake. The rule screen, its preview and the button now offer just those.
v0.61, 2026-11-01
- The Draw controls share one row on desktop: the shapes, the grid size, then Clear and Random symbol. On phones the same row wraps onto two. The page column is a little wider (700 pixels) to make room.
v0.60, 2026-11-01
- The word "open" on the start page moves to the middle bar of the F (the arm) and is set smaller to fit it. It still turns with the bar.
v0.59, 2026-11-01
- On the start page the word "open" now sits inside the top bar of the F and turns with it, at whatever angle the bar is at. The line of text under the mark is gone.
v0.58, 2026-11-01
- The start page mark no longer jumps when the rollover ends. Each piece now moves from wherever it is to its next place, so leaving, or re-entering part-way, carries on smoothly.
v0.57, 2026-11-01
- One control panel on desktop and phone. It sits collapsed along the bottom edge at every step; open it for the animation speed and the paper and ink colours, with About and the version below. These controls are no longer inside the steps.
v0.56, 2026-11-01
- Every step now fits on one screen without scrolling, on the phones and desktop sizes tested (from 360 by 640 up to 1920 by 1080). The animation and sheet give up height to their controls, and on short phones the explanatory text on the output cards steps aside. Only the very smallest phones (320 by 568) still scroll a little on two steps.
v0.55, 2026-11-01
- The flow is strictly step by step. A line at the top says where you are ("Step 3 of 7 · Animation"), the tabs that let you jump ahead are gone, and every step has Next and Back. The seven steps are Draw, Rule, Animation, Sheet, Print, GIF or video, and Book.
v0.54, 2026-11-01
- Outputs come after Results. The order is now Draw, Rule, Results (Animation, Sheet), then Outputs (Print, GIF, Book), with the book last. Outputs is a tab of its own, and the treatment and colour choices stay with the results.
v0.53, 2026-11-01
- Choosing a rule is a page of its own. The grid gives way to a looping preview of what the chosen rule does to your shape, and it changes as you pick Make, Unmake or Remake. A line says how many outcomes it makes. Back returns to the grid to edit the shape; the yellow button makes the real thing.
v0.52, 2026-11-01
- The start page F is built from three blocks, the fewest that keep its structure: the stem, the top bar and the arm. They lie scattered and turned at random, and slide home and straighten into the F on rollover. Only these three shapes are used; the circles, triangles and quarters are gone from the mark.
v0.51, 2026-11-01
- The Camera button is hidden for now. The code is still there.
v0.50, 2026-11-01
- The rule is its own step. Draw the shape, press Next, then choose Make, Unmake or Remake on a screen of its own, with a line saying what each does. The rule icons are no longer on screen while you are drawing. The order is Draw, Rule, Results.
v0.49, 2026-11-01
- The three rules are now Make, Unmake and Remake. Unmake takes a block away (it was Take away). Remake moves a block away from the rest (it was Rearrange). The button, the line above the grid and the title on every export read "make you up", "unmake you" and "remake you".
v0.48, 2026-11-01
- Density is closer to the original publication: much finer lines, and the original plus the last four variants each keep their own angle and spacing, so older layers hold their texture and the overlaps build into a mesh. The book's Density page uses the same layers. The animation speed control on the results screen is legible again.
v0.47, 2026-11-01
- Grid size is back on the screen, under the grid, on desktop and phone. On desktop the colours and the animation speed also have a place on the results screen; they had been left in the hidden side panel.
v0.46, 2026-11-01
- The start page mark is now eight pieces in a random mix of squares, circles, triangles and quarters. Roll over it (or wait a moment on a phone) and they slide, straighten and square up into the F. Leave and they scatter again.
v0.45, 2026-11-01
- Buttons follow one system again: tools (downloads, Clear, Random symbol, Camera, Preview) are one size, the make button and Next are one taller size, and Back is an outline.
v0.44, 2026-11-01
- One step-by-step flow on desktop and phone: Draw, Animation, Sheet, Print, GIF, then Book last. Each step has Back and Next, and the book is the end of the line.
v0.43, 2026-11-01
- Desktop now follows the phone flow: Draw first, then Results, one at a time in a centred column. The fixed side panel is gone on desktop.
- The yellow button reads "Make you up" or "Unmake you" to match the chosen rule.
v0.42, 2026-11-01
- Direction stripes now line up along a column. Blocks in a stack of vertical blocks (or a row of horizontal ones) share one spacing, so each line runs straight through the whole run, and two columns side by side keep an even gap between them. Before, each block chose its own spacing, so lines stepped sideways wherever one block had a neighbour and the next did not.
v0.41, 2026-11-01
- Preview the book. The Book choice has a Preview the book button that opens the book on screen before you download it: in reading order as spreads (the cover alone, then pairs of pages, then the back cover), or as the printer's sheets in the order they are printed. Arrow keys step through it. It shows the same pages the PDF will hold, with your colours, end papers, preface and message, and on a phone it shows one page at a time.
v0.40, 2026-11-01
- Desktop fits the window. The animation and the contact sheet are sized to the height of the window, so the Next and Back buttons are always in view (checked at 1100 by 700, 1280 by 800, 1440 by 900 and 1920 by 1080), and the treatment tiles keep a steady width.
v0.39, 2026-11-01
- Much less scrolling. On phones the animation, the contact sheet and the closing step now fit above the bottom bar at the three phone sizes tested, and the desktop panel no longer scrolls. The closing step shows one choice at a time (Print, GIF or video, Book) as icon tabs, instead of three cards stacked. The treatments, Flat and Isometric, and the colour row sit with the results on desktop, and on phones the headings and the Process button are tucked away on the results page to save room.
- Download buttons have a download icon.
- Selected is always yellow. On paper, selected text links (Draw and Results, the print sizes, the GIF shape) are now ink pills with yellow text, like the icon tiles, and the chosen colour preset has a yellow ring.
v0.38, 2026-11-01
- The three rule icons (Make, Take away, Rearrange) now sit beside the shape buttons, with Process on its own underneath. On short phones the grid shrinks to the screen height so Process stays in view.
- Colour now shows in real time. The drawing grid uses the chosen paper and ink, so changing a colour is visible straight away, before or after Process, and not only on the results.
v0.37, 2026-11-01
- Isometric view. A Flat or Isometric switch sits beside the treatments, so Form, Direction, Solid, Ghost and Density can each be seen flat or laid onto the isometric plane, with the blocks given a little thickness in a mid tone. The stripes, ghosts and fine lines all follow the plane. It applies on screen, to every download, to the GIF and video, and to the book, which centres the cover on the projected shape.
v0.36, 2026-11-01
- Colour. The settings sheet has a paper colour and an ink colour, with four presets (Default, Book, Night and Yellow). They apply to the animation and contact sheet on screen and to everything you download: the SVGs, the print, the GIF and video and the book. In the book the light pages are paper with ink and the dark plates the other way round, so any pair of colours keeps the original's two-colour design; the end papers stay white on yellow. The app's own screen keeps its colours.
v0.35, 2026-11-01
- The print is quieter. The title no longer runs across the top of the page: it sits small in the bottom left corner, in italic ("29 ways I can make you up"), with "Form by Patrick Walker, form.pkwr.co" beneath it in small sans type in the same ink. The contact sheet preview on screen shows the same.
v0.34, 2026-11-01
- The "Download this frame" button is gone. For a single frame, hide every variant but one on the contact sheet and make a print: it comes out as that one frame, full size. The contact sheet step now says so.
v0.33, 2026-11-01
- Direction stripes are now adaptive, closer to the book. They run flush to a block's edge on every open side, as in the original, and are set in by half a gap only on a side where a block with stripes running the same way touches, so two such blocks make an even gap and not a doubled line. Where stripes meet across the other direction they run into each other as clean T-junctions, as in the book. Line width follows from the neighbours, from 20% of the cell down to about 17%. It applies on screen, in the downloads, the GIF and video, and the publication.
v0.32, 2026-11-01
- Direction stripes fixed where blocks touch. The outer stripes sat flush to each block's edge, so two neighbouring blocks joined into a line twice as thick as the rest. The three stripes are now a sixth of the cell wide with equal gaps, inset by half a gap, so the pattern carries on evenly from block to block, and on square blocks the lines run a hair past the cell so there is no seam where they join. This applies on screen, in the downloads, in the GIF and video, and in the publication, and the Direction icon is redrawn to match.
v0.31, 2026-11-01
- A video for social media, next to the GIF, in the same square (1:1) and story (9:16) shapes. It is recorded in the browser as the animation plays, repeated to run at least six seconds, and saved as MP4 where the browser can write it (Safari and current Chrome) or WebM otherwise, which Instagram and TikTok do not take. Every frame of the GIF and the video carries the title line and a small "Made with Form, form.pkwr.co" credit.
v0.30, 2026-11-01
- Credit and terms now travel with the work. Every SVG, PDF and GIF Form makes carries "Made with Form, form.pkwr.co. © 2026 Patrick Walker", with the terms for sharing and printing, in the file itself (a description and metadata in SVGs, document properties in PDFs, a comment in GIFs), and the book's colophon states them. The About page says what people may do with what they make.
v0.29, 2026-11-01
- Icons on the screen. The steps (Animation, Sheet, Make), the rule (Make, Take away, Rearrange) and the five treatments (Form, Direction, Solid, Ghost, Density) are icon buttons with short captions, each icon drawn to show what it does. On a phone the rule icons sit beside Process on the Draw page and the treatments sit above the results; on desktop they are in the panel. Changing a treatment, the rule or the grid size now redoes the results in place and keeps you on the step you were on. The settings sheet is left with grid size and speed.
v0.28, 2026-11-01
- The results are a short path with clear prompts, one step at a time, with nothing to scroll: 1 Animation, 2 Contact sheet (fitted to the screen, with Back and Next), then 3 Make a book, a print or a GIF, each as its own card. The contact sheet no longer runs off the page; on phones it is sized so Back and Next stay in view.
- A GIF for social media. It is a looping GIF of the animation, with the title line on every frame, as a square (720 by 720) or a story (9:16, 720 by 1280). It is made on the device with no library, uses 32 steps between paper and ink, and takes at most 120 frames. A 93-frame square GIF is under 500 KB.
v0.27, 2026-11-01
- In the publication the title line ("N ways I can make you up") is no longer printed twice. It stays as a small line at the foot of the inner pages, and is left off the cover, the first dark plate and the colophon, which already show it.
v0.26, 2026-11-01
- Cumulative Density now follows the original. Every block is drawn as fine lines, with no solid fill, and each iteration adds its own layer: the original in vertical lines, this variant at 45 degrees, and the two variants before it at 135 and 90 degrees. Where layers overlap the lines cross into a darker mesh, so tone builds up as texture, and the effect works with one move per variant. It applies on screen, in the downloads and in the publication, where the lines are PDF tiling patterns so the file stays small.
v0.25, 2026-10-31
- Two optional pages for the publication. A preface about the project, one page set from the About text (the Summary and Description), and a personal message, one page in your own words (typed in a box, up to 600 characters, accents kept). They come after the front end paper and before the treatments, message first, and the book stays a multiple of four pages.
v0.24, 2026-10-31
- End papers option for the publication. Tick it and the book gains two pages, a pattern made from the iterations, white on yellow: the front one inside the front cover runs through the variants in order, the back one inside the back cover runs through them in reverse. The pattern runs to the page edge, since there is no bleed. The book is still a multiple of four pages.
v0.23, 2026-10-31
- Publication. Two new buttons make a book of the current shape in the design of the original publication: a cover, the five treatments each with the shape on top and its variants in a grid, dark plates with the shape and its variants, and a colophon, all A5 with no bleed. Imposed is a PDF with two pages on each A4 landscape sheet in booklet order (print double sided, flip on short edge, fold and staple). Pages is the plain A5 pages. Hidden variants are left out, and every page carries the line "N ways I can make you up" (or "unmake you").
- The iterations on the contact sheet are numbered in lower-case Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), as the sections of the book are. The original has no number.
v0.22, 2026-10-31
- A Camera button. It shows what the camera sees, mirrored, as blocks on the grid, live: a cell is filled where the picture is darker than average, and the Blocks slider moves that cut-off. Take freezes it, Stop puts the old grid back, and Process takes the picture too. It is worked out on the device and never recorded or sent. A grid of 11 or 15 shows more of a face, and Unmake suits it best because it does not need the blocks to touch. The Make message now says so.
v0.21, 2026-10-31
- The count now travels with the artwork. The animation, the single frame and the contact sheet each carry a title line such as "29 ways I can make you up" (or "6 ways I can unmake you"), written as text in the SVG. The number is the number of variants in the file, so hiding variants lowers it, and the on-screen contact sheet shows the same line.
v0.20, 2026-10-31
- On phones the Process button, with its message, now sits on the page under the grid, in front of the sheet, so it can be pressed without opening the settings. It stays visible on both Draw and Results.
v0.19, 2026-10-31
- A line from Patrick Walker under the About title: "This hole is a line some time next week."
v0.18, 2026-10-31
- The About text now has the same structure as the About page on Spot: Summary, Description, Using it, How it's made, Energy & sustainability, Details, Privacy, Rights, Third-party and Elsewhere. It says plainly that Form stores nothing, counts no visits and uploads nothing. On phones the About panel opens with the Summary.
v0.17, 2026-10-31
- The contact sheet is a portrait page. Choose A3, A2, A1 or A0 and the variants are laid out on one page of that size, as large as they will fit, and the download is an SVG at that physical size in millimetres, ready to print. The size is in the file name. The preview on screen is the same page, so what you see is what downloads, and hidden variants are left out and the rest grow to fill the page.
v0.16, 2026-10-31
- Phone layout reworked. The grid now fills the screen width, so cells are big enough to tap, with the live count above it and the shape buttons, Clear and Random symbol underneath. The bottom sheet holds only the settings (grid size, rule, view, speed), starts collapsed to a Process bar, and opens with the handle. The Draw and Results links switch the screen between the grid and the results; Process moves to Results. The two tabs from v0.13 are gone.
- Changing the grid size no longer resets anything: your blocks are kept and re-entered, centred, in the new grid, and the results are redone if they were showing. If the shape is too big for the new size, the size stays as it was and a message says so.
v0.15, 2026-10-31
- The start page's round open button is now a yellow F built from blocks, tilted, with "open" under it. On hover it straightens with a turn. On phones the open button in the About panel is a tilted block that straightens when touched.
v0.14, 2026-10-31
- A start page, as on Spot: a black screen with a round open button, the version bottom left, and a yellow Form · About strip that slides the About text out from the right. The text is read from the About page, so there is one copy. On phones the panel carries its own open button and a More about Form link. It shows on every visit unless the address has a query (for example ?x), and Enter or Space also opens it.
- Fixed the numbered lines in the About text, which sat too far left.
v0.13, 2026-10-31
- Phone layout needs far less scrolling. The bottom sheet has two tabs at the bottom, Draw (grid, shapes, grid size, Clear, Random symbol) and Rule (Make or Unmake, the view, speed), as Spot does. Process, the message and the About and version links stay in view under the tabs. On a phone the shape buttons sit beside the grid, and the grid is sized to the screen height.
v0.12, 2026-10-31
- Unmake now has two ways. Unmake: take away removes one block per step. Unmake: rearrange moves one block per step to an empty cell that touches nothing, leaving its old cell marked, and stops when no block touches another. Rearranging keeps every block, so the shape comes apart without anything being lost. The step count after Process says how many moves it took.
v0.11, 2026-10-31
- New Rule setting, Make or Unmake. Make is the book's rule. Unmake is its reverse: each step takes one block away, in a random order, and it never comes back. The last frame is empty. The subtitle reads "N ways I can unmake you", where N is the number of blocks (the steps). Process again for a new order. The cumulative views work on it: a removed cell stays marked.
v0.10, 2026-10-31
- New starter symbol: the inverted cross.
v0.9, 2026-10-31
- The grid starts with a random symbol instead of always the T: T, cross, plus, ankh, arrow, H, ring, tower, U, L or stairs. A new Random symbol button picks another (never the same twice in a row). Changing the grid size also picks a new one.
v0.8, 2026-10-31
- Cumulative transparency is now an onion skin. Each variant is drawn with the six variants shown before it as fading ghosts, each older one fainter, so tone builds up wherever the same cell was filled more than once. Ghosts line up in the original grid, in the sheet, the animation and the downloads.
v0.7, 2026-10-31
- The Moves setting is gone. Every variant is one move, as in the book. Downloads are named without the moves count.
v0.6, 2026-10-31
- Cumulative density view: each cell the blocks have left is hatched with diagonal lines, and the lines get finer the more often the cell was left (up to eight times). Blocks stay solid.
v0.5, 2026-10-31
- The 11 in the subtitle is live: it shows the number of variants the current grid, Moves setting and view would make (up to the cap of 500), and updates as you edit. It is 0 when the blocks are empty or do not touch.
- The term Visual Identity is gone from the About page.
v0.4, 2026-10-31
- New shape: half square triangle.
- Shapes are now single. The left and right arches are one arch, and clicking a placed block again turns it a quarter. After four turns it is removed (square and circle are removed on the second click). Clicking with a different shape selected replaces the block.
v0.3, 2026-10-31
- Phone layout matches Spot: on touch screens and windows up to 600 px wide the controls become a bottom sheet with a grab handle that collapses and reopens it.
v0.2, 2026-10-31
- Cumulative transparency view: each trace is drawn at low opacity, so a cell that was left more than once reads darker. Blocks stay solid.
v0.1, 2026-10-31
First release.
- Form, Direction and Cumulative Solid views, with SVG export of the animation, the frame and the contact sheet.
- One rule from the book: one block moves per move and the place it left stays marked. The Moves setting repeats it, 1 to 6 times.
- Odd grid sizes (7, 9, 11, 15; default 9), so the T sits in the middle column.
- Variants are ordered by block, then distance. Clicking a variant hides or keeps it, which affects the animation and the downloads.
- Direction stripes run along the line each block is joined on, flush to the cell edges.
- About page referring to the publication, with the author credit and references.
- Styling matches Spot. Favicon and touch icon added. CNAME for form.pkwr.co added.
